So we returned from Pennsylvania with an appointment for Nathan at his pediatrician's office the day after we got back. Matt took him in while I stayed home with Josh and they immediately sent him over for xrays as Dr. Carson thought there was definitely something going on. This was on Thursday. Friday morning Dr. Carson called me to confirm he indeed had a fracture and need to see the ortho doctor. She wanted Nathan to get in that same day if at all possible, however, I wasn't able to get him there as the office closed at noon AND they didn't really want me showing up with an infant in the office. There has been a A LOT of sickness going around in Colorado Springs this winter.
I booked Nathan for Monday and again needed to stay home with Josh while Matt took him in. Matt said it all happened really fast. They saw theortho doc and he said that he indeed had a Type V Salter Harris fracture (growth plate fracture) of his tibia (shin bone). And he sent him in to be casted right away. Growth plate fractures are not
something you want to mess with as there is the potential of lifelong
damage if it doesn't heal correctly. The doctor in PA said that even if it was fractured, it would not be casted, which I guess was not the case at all. So they put Nathan in a cast with 60 degrees flexion for 4 weeks.
I was surprised to see Nathan show up with a very high BLUE leg cast! It brought back memories of my junior year in high school where I too broke my tibia and had a high leg cast that was the exact same color! I wish I had a picture to share but that was before digital. Apparently, Nathan first said he wanted pink and when daddy steered him away from that, he went with blue!
He was pretty proud of it!
Over the next few weeks we got increasingly better at getting around in it. He was able to walk, jump and get around pretty well! I was grateful for this. I still carried him down the stairs but he could usually go up them fine.
Josh at 3 months!
Somehow, Nathan never did hit Josh with that cast. I'm very grateful!
The VanHorns...being the awesome friends they are...brought us dinner.
Landin and Josh! 2 months apart.
Nathan & Jamin were giving each other rides in Nathan's dump truck!
After he saw Jamin using the potty he wanted to...cast and all!
Chillin' and watching a show
Matt had to wrap Nathan's cast all up for his baths.
Love's his daddy.
Ready for church in new pants from Aunt Court that fit over his cast!
Some pictures after church.
Opened an early present...popcorn dishes...and played some Curious George matching game on Sunday night.
And skyped with Papa & Nana
Matt worked on Monday, Christmas Eve, and then we went over to Kyle's parents house for our yearly tradition. This family is so kind to invite us year after year.
Nathan always has a blast with Jamin.
Boys playing pool :)
So pretty...it was snowing when we left their house! Now that's what I call Christmas Eve!
Oops. Realized when we got home I didn't take pics of Josh & Landin! So here's Josh in his festive wear.
